Ross Video Announce two new IP Streaming Encoders

Ross Video announced two new IP Streaming encoders:

 

SSE-8673              Single-channel H.264 Streaming Encoder

SDE-8674             Dual-channel H.264 Streaming Encoder

 

These are based upon the MSE-8671 and MDE-8672 Encoders we launched at NAB this year, but are at a lower price point, targeted at IP streaming applications. These encoders are primarily designed for streaming to CDNs such as Akamai, uStream, WOWZA, YouTube and more. They make a great companion to Carbonite switchers for web-streaming applications.

 

Features

The SSE/SDE streaming encoders are high performance real time H.264 SD and HD video encoding solutions that are designed to be able to distribute video across any type of IP network

Target Applications

These encoders are a great companion to Carbonite Switchers when competing with other solutions which include integrated streaming solutions. They are superior to the bundled software encoders found on certain “Studio-in-a-box” solutions out there for several reasons:

  • Higher quality video at a given bitrate
  • They do not tax the CPU / GPU of the Studio system, or force the user to disable other processing in the box
  • Lower-latency with low packet jitter, especially important when streaming directly to a player client
  • Robust hardware solution, housed in the openGear frame

 

These encoders are also great for in-house monitoring, streaming to set top boxes and media servers, such as Wowza™ Streaming Engine or Adobe® Media Server.

 

Competition

Pesa C22-OG - $3995

  • C22-OG is an openGear Card
  • RTP and RTMP only; no HLS or UDP. This makes the Pesa ok for basic CDN streaming but not for direct streaming to set-top boxes, mobile devices or PCs
  • No Closed Captioning or VANC data support
  • 720p and 1080p ONLY. No SD support; no other web-friendly formats.
  • Enterprise-grade DSP encoder – compared with Ross, it is very bursty, requiring greater client-side buffering and latency. The SSE/SDE uses a broadcast encoder ASIC for highest quality, low latency and low jitter.

 

Elemental Live - $30K+

  • Hi-end broadcast quality encoder
  • Supports multiple streams and renditions
  • High price
  • Overkill for simple streaming applications

 

Software Encoders (Adobe Media Encoder, Telestream, NewTek, etc.) - $(a few hundred++)

How are these different than the MSE-8671 / MDE-8672?

The SSE/SDE and MSE/MDE are built on the same encoder core. You get the same high-quality encoding on both families.

 

The SSE/SDE is your IP Streaming Solution. They are primarily designed for streaming to CDNs such as Akamai, uStream, WOWZA™, YouTube and more.

 

The MSE/MDE is your broadcast/contribution encoding solution. They are more tailored for contribution links and streaming to professional decoders, and come at a higher price point.

Ross Video Launches Ultrix – The Ultimate Connectivity Platform

Ultrix 12G Routing
Ultrix handles all of the SDI data rates from 270Mb/s to 12Gb/s.  Designing for 12G support means Ultrix offers superior performance at lower 1.5 and 3 Gb/s data rates.  This makes Ultrix a great fit for today’s signals while providing peace of mind for those concerned about supporting 4K in the future.

In addition to BNC I/O, Ultrix offers SFP slots that can provide other types of I/O like Fiber, HDMI and IP.

Ultriscape Multiviewer
Ultriscape is the industry’s first software enabled multiviewer in a router. No special output boards, crosspoints, or multichannel connection cables are needed. Because the multiviewer outputs can be assigned to standard BNC or Flexible Aux outputs on the frame, users have the flexibility to choose the output type they need for each monitor, thus eliminating the hassle of matching traditional multiviewer outputs to the monitors being driven.

Ultrimix Advanced Audio Processing

The Council of the European Union simplifies Meeting Control with Ross Legislative Solution

A Ross Legislative Solution installation has been completed at the Council of the EU's headquarters in Brussels, Belgium (via Proximus, the local provider and Diginet, the local RossVideo distributor). The system is comprised of a Ross Carbonite production switcher and the Legislative Control System for managing the many multi-lingual meetings.

The Ross Legislative Solution offers great flexibility and this is one of the main reasons why the Council of the EU chose this solution. It offers the ability to both configure the chamber and to make updates quickly and easily; technicians have been able to store camera shots, marks and microphone identification so that if something goes wrong with a component they can replace the device, quickly load the file and get back up and running in a matter of moments, instead of delaying a meeting while dealing with technical issues.

The Ross Legislative Solution enables a single person to produce a live, HD, multi-camera program with graphic overlays without needing to understand the underlying technology. It can integrate with the microphone system to assist the operator in identifying who will be the next person to speak. The program can be fed to cable and broadcast outlets for immediate delivery, or to a web streaming encoder for access via a legislature’s website.

The Council of the EU (often still referred to as the Council of Ministers) is one of the Institutions of the European Union (EU) as listed in the Treaty on European Union. It is part of the essentially bicameral EU legislature (the other legislative body being the European Parliament) and represents the executive governments of the EU's member states.

Given that multiple languages are used by the many different countries that comprise the Council of the EU, the system is also designed to internally broadcast the speaker to the translation booths around the chamber. This helps the interpreters do a better job because they can see the facial and physical gestures that are key to ensuring the context of the spoken word is taken into account.

Their primary requirement was to have a fully automated solution to broadcast the speaker internally. Their next requirement was to be able to control it remotely. Last, but not least, they wanted a system that a single operator can manage to produce a live HD program for our public debates. Ross worked with the Council of the EU to understand their requirements and developed custom features that helped improve the overall effectiveness of the system.

Ross Video Introduces Trackless Virtual Sets at IBC 2015

 Ross Virtual Solutions announced that Ross Video will show Trackless Studio – a new virtual set software that works without camera tracking at this year’s IBC show in Amsterdam. Built on top of the XPression Real-Time Motion Graphics System, this intuitive and cost-effective product brings virtual environments to a whole new set of customers.

Trackless Studio allows users to perform dramatic camera moves (crane or jib), utilize multiple cameras, perform transitions, add live inputs, trigger real-time 3D graphics, recall clips or still images, and create macros for complex events. It also uses stationary physical cameras, instead of encoded camera heads or optical tracking systems, with all movement handled by virtual cameras inside of the XPression scene.

“Our goal is to have the most complete virtual solutions product line in the industry, so we’ve been working with our XPression Team for the last year and half to develop a solution that fits a different part of our market,” explained Dave Larson, General Manager of Ross Virtual Solutions. “Cost-conscious customers are still interested in using virtual, and Trackless Studio is the perfect way for them to get engaged while offering them an upgrade path to tracked implementations in the future.”

Thanks to Ross Video’s solutions-oriented strategy, Trackless Studio works well with other Ross products, including Carbonite switchers and Ross Dashboard control software. For example, the joystick on the Carbonite can be used to move virtual cameras, and Trackless Studio shows up as a supported device in Dashboard. Other methods of remote control are possible with the on-board web server and through optional X-Keys control panels.
